Healthy Roots Hemp is Non-GMO Certified

The Non-GMO designation is assigned by the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit whose mission it is to build and sustain a food supply free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Healthy Roots Hemp strongly believes in using and producing all-natural products. We believe there just isn’t enough known on the subject of GMOs to confidently use or produce goods containing genetically modified hemp or any other ingredient. The United States does not currently regulate the use of GMOs in commercial farming, which has led to public health concerns. While we wait for US policy around GMOs to catch up with the rest of the world, the Non-GMO seal is a great indicator of what goods are safe from genetically modified material in their production. 

What Does GMO Actually Mean?

While we often hear the term “Genetically Modified Organism”, many of us still don’t understand exactly what it means. It refers to any organism of any kind whose genes have been altered in a lab using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. GMOs are not naturally occurring and may have both direct and indirect impacts on the environment. 

The GMO Discussion

The science around GMOs has hardly reached a consensus, with many significant studies on the subject being sponsored by biotech companies themselves. In 2015, the discussion about GMOs became centered around crops that were genetically modified to tolerate glyphosate, the active ingredient in the popular herbicide Roundup, manufactured by the Monsanto Company. Some studies, such as one from the University of Washington that shows the wide-spread use of this weed-killer correlates with a 41% increase in the risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, have caused concern in some that our overreliance on GMOs is impacting our health. While incidents like this are not the direct fault of genetic modification, most crops in the country are genetically mutated to tolerate these kinds of highly toxic herbicides and pesticides, some of which we are learning have serious health and environmental risks associated.

Considering facts like these, sixty-four countries, including the entire European Union, Australia, and Japan, have laws and regulations that require the labeling of products that include GMOs at any step in the supply chain. At this point in time, the United States has no such regulations in action, but the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, a rule that states bioengineered food must be marked as such, is slated to take effect by 2022. In the meantime, the Non-GMO seal serves as a clear marker of GMO safe products.

Are GMOs Safe?

It’s hard to say definitively that genetically modified organisms pose a direct public health risk. There is, however, enough information out there to raise red flags in most of the developed world to at least regulate the transparency with which companies using GMOs must market their products. Health-conscious people and responsible companies around the world have been rejecting GMOs for their harmful side effects.
